Day 58

Really, Snow, really? You’re not supposed to kill my plants. That’s just mean. I only have two of them.

I’m making a mold today for the bronze pour next week. I hadn’t really planned on using bronze, but I do like the greenness of it after it sits for a while in the healthy outside environment. Haven’t used a mold or poured a large amount of molten metal for a while, hopefully this works. Paper metal? We’ll see. I finally get to use my welding equipment. And hammers. And leather jacket. And anvil. I’ll have to remember to drink a large glass of milk afterward, following in the footsteps of the great Don Boyd.

Day 43

The critique on Thursday was helpful, in the way that in explaining my process to others, I understood it a little better myself. There were some helpful pointers, some not so much and some comments that are making me think. Which is how a good critique is supposed to go, yes? Kaname liked the paper clay mesh. So I shall attempt to make another and integrate it into the piece. More glaze testing this week, because finding a rusty/ peeling black paint glaze is harder than it sounds. I love science!

Day 37

The zoo animal illustrator Charlotte Belland had our 1st year MFA class make video artist statements. I do not like being on camera but have a love for animation and Sigur Rós. So, with fragmented sentences and one spelling error (on purpose, see if you can find it) all typed out on paper clay, here is my artist statement for the semester. Ta-da. And thank you to Nevin for his help.

Day 33

I’ve never met any of the people who have inspired me to make art in the past and present. Until last night. I was given the chance to have dinner with Jeff Smith, so I took it and ran with it like a thief. After I geeked out for a bit, I gathered my courage and talked to him. He’s a pretty awesome guy. He even signed my copy of Bone. Maybe I’ll read it again for the 8th time. Ha! All of this makes me want to draw rather than sculpt. It would be ludicrous to switch from sculpture to illustration now, so I won’t, as tempting as it is. Comics, illustrations and animation are my first love, my first intro to the art world; drawing on the backs of church bulletins, fighting with my brothers over the Sunday comics, sneaking episodes of the Simpsons without parental knowledge. But I do have a tendency to think in 3-D, even on paper. Oo, maybe I’ll draw on my sculptures…
